Power Tariff Shock Looms in Pakistan as Electricity Price May Rise by Rs0.82 Per Unit
According to details, National Electric Power Regulatory Authority will hold a hearing tomorrow on a request to increase electricity prices by Rs0.82 per unit for May’s fuel cost adjustment.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency stated that if the request is approved without changes, consumers will bear an additional burden of nearly Rs12 billion.
In May, Pakistan generated 12.638 billion units of electricity, with the average fuel cost recorded at Rs9.25 per unit, compared to the estimated fuel cost of Rs8.43 per unit.
The power generation mix for May showed that 33.27% of electricity was produced through hydropower, while 11.66% came from local coal. Imported coal contributed 13.54%, and furnace oil accounted for 0.16% of total generation.
Additionally, 8.31% of electricity was generated from local gas, 11.81% from imported LNG, and 14.25% from nuclear fuel.
The proposed tariff hike is expected to further increase financial pressure on consumers already struggling with rising inflation and utility costs.
