Pakistan Brokers US-Iran Ceasefire

The United States and Iran have agreed to a two-week ceasefire and consented to begin negotiations in Islamabad. The agreement comes after rising tensions, including a 48-hour ultimatum issued by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had warned Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face military consequences.
Just hours before the deadline expired, Pakistan intervened diplomatically, persuading both sides to de-escalate. According to Trump, the ceasefire decision followed discussions with Pakistani leadership, who urged delaying any potential strike on Iran.
Under the agreement, Iran has reopened the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks, ensuring safe and immediate maritime access. In return, the U.S. has agreed to suspend military operations, including airstrikes.
Trump described the move as a mutual ceasefire, adding that the U.S. had already achieved most of its military objectives and that progress toward a long-term peace agreement with Iran was “well advanced.”
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and thanked its leadership for facilitating the agreement.
According to Iran’s National Security Council, formal negotiations between the U.S. and Iran will begin in Islamabad on April 10 and may continue for up to 15 days. The primary goal is to reach a comprehensive and lasting peace agreement.
