Hoarders Given Free Rein in Lahore as Soaring Prices Make Life Miserable for the Poor

Fruits, vegetables, and essential food items are reportedly being sold at prices significantly higher than the government-notified rates. Bananas, oranges, apples, papayas, and watermelons — along with vegetables and meat — have nearly doubled in price in several markets.
Citizens claim that official rate lists have become a mere formality, while price control magistrates’ actions remain insufficient and ineffective. Many believe that the district administration has failed to ensure compliance with government pricing policies, allowing hoarders to exploit the situation freely.
As a result, low-income and middle-class families are facing severe financial pressure. Meeting daily household needs has become increasingly difficult amid rising food inflation.
Residents have demanded immediate and strict action against hoarders and profiteers. They are urging authorities to impose heavy fines, ensure market inspections, and make the price control system more effective to provide relief to the public.
With inflation continuing to rise, citizens warn that urgent administrative intervention is necessary before the crisis worsens further.
